📡 1. LifeAfter MMO $15M-$16M per Month, 2. Amazon to Launch Steam Competitor, and 3. Crypto Gaming Survey Results

Games Radar Thursday!

Happy Games Radar Thursday,

Here is an I. game alert, II. word on the street, III. question to consider this week, and IV. results from our Crypto Gaming survey from last week

I. Game Alert

The Rise of MMO’s on Mobile: LifeAfter

What is even going on these days? First MOBAs and now MMOs on mobile? WTF is even happening right now? Lol

Well, folks, it turns out Survival + Zombies + MMO is basically like peanut butter + chocolate + ice cream.

In LifeAfter, players control a player in a post-apocalyptic zombie setting. The game plays like a shooter game but is definitely MMO first and a shooter second.

From its launch in October of 2018, the game has performed strongly and even now makes between $15M-$16M per month in net revenue (Sensor Tower estimates).

Unsurprisingly, the majority of revenue comes from China and Japan which combine for nearly 75% of life of product net revenue. However, don’t sleep on the US. While still only a small fraction of net revenue at 5.5% life of product, we can see a steady increase in absolute and proportionate revenue from the US over the past couple of years. While only a single data point, it may potentially indicate a small but growing acceptance of MMO games on mobile in the West.

II. Word on the Street

According to Twitter user Sinoc, the leaked Twitch.tv hack revealed not only user data, but also information on an unreleased competitive product to Steam:

Even further, some of the key features from the new service were exposed including game-specific support for Fortnite and PUBG and potentially VR chat:

By the way, I’m quitting video games and will change my career to now focus on Dungeons & Dragons…

III. Question For You

You should never count out Amazon (see below), but even Epic has had difficulty cracking the PC games store market.

Question For You:

How much market share by revenue will Amazon's new Steam competitive PC store service take of the overall market in 5 years?

1. 0% Amazon won't get this anywhere! | vote

2. <10% | vote

3. 10-25% | vote

4. 26-50% | vote

5. 51-75% | vote

IV. Survey Results: Crypto Gaming

Well based on the surveys from last week’s Games Radar, our results are now in!

#1. Looks like most of you think the big guys are coming with NFT or crypto-based games of some kind at some point.

#2. We got like a 50/50 split on the long-term viability of NFTs:

#3. Seems like the general view for crypto game market share is a skew towards 25% or so of the market in 5 years.
